Some years I had read "Lord Valentine's Castle", I stumbled on Longfellow's poem about Robert of Sicily and I was delighted by the influence of the poet on the fantasy author. Really like the way you have reviewed the novel and provided a background to the stories. I didn't realize there was an analogy with a Jack Vance book; must check that out.
