As such, the attitudes can still be representative, but the inherent humanity remains two-dimensional.

Regarding the dislocation of Middletown, perhaps I should take a second look? I was so put off by the pulpy nature of the super-beings that I dismissed the uprooting. I remain put off by the super-beings, but maybe I should give Hamilton more credit for at least couching his idea in a grounded (har-har) thematic structure?

Thanks again for your comments.Jessehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07796098208589965362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670543499274741427.post-55537777979437792742017-04-25T11:40:50.659+02:002017-04-25T11:40:50.659+02:00I think you missed the very accurate character por...I think you missed the very accurate character portrayals because you were likely born after the 1960s. In my opinion, the novel captures the characters and attitudes of the 1950s- early 1960s very well. Middletowns of the time were exactly as portrayed and the myopic provincial feeling was right on the mark.

regarding the dislocation: again you missed the point. It was totally necessary in order to focus on the attachment to earth, tradition and culture as factors most affected by the culture shock of a brave new world suddenly appearing. The novel wonderfully captures and explores the reactions of average people of the era to a rootless technological world --- not so unlike the contrast of our own (only 70 years later) extremely technological and anonymous lives in which technology has pushed aside family and personal intimacy.

B ZionAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13147078393818733543noreply@blogger.com
